Battle Assist Empty Battle Assist

Hi @ all,
can somebody explain how BattleAssist works and what is the best practice?
And how important is BattleAssist by comparsion with other things like "Equipment Skill up"?
Is there a genearal "how to" for an order / a sequence, for example "MAX Gems -> MAX Skill -> Skill up EQ -> Fortify EQ -> Skill BattleAssist"?
